About About You are warmly invited to attend a special event marking 30 years since Professor Sir Harry Kroto FRS was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of a new form of carbon: Buckminsterfullerene, C₆₀. The event will celebrate both the groundbreaking discovery of C₆₀ and Sir Harry Kroto’s enduring scientific legacy. The programme will feature: · Talks from former students and colleagues of Sir Harry Kroto, offering both professional and personal reflections · Presentations from leading researchers exploring the impact of Sir Harry Kroto’s work - from education and outreach to science policy and commercialisation · Short TEDx-style talks from current academics at the University of Sussex · A panel discussion on future directions, building on the Sussex C₆₀ legacy. The day will also include a sandwich lunch, a drinks reception, and an optional guided tour of the University of Sussex nanoscience laboratories and the Kroto Room. We very much hope you will be able to join us for this commemorative event to honour Sir Harry Kroto’s extraordinary discovery and exceptional scientific career which culminated in the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 30 years ago. Programme: Morning: Celebrating the Discovery and Legacy of Professor Sir Harry Kroto FRS 9.30am Guest Arrivals, Registration and Coffee 10am Honouring the History Welcome and introduction, with videos from Sussex and Rice Universities celebrating the discovery of C₆₀ and its impact on family, colleagues and friends, followed by a series of talks from Professor Sir Harry Kroto’s former students and colleagues. 11.30am Coffee Break 12pm The C₆₀ Legacy The impact of Harry’s work - from education and outreach to science policy and commercialisation. 1pm Lunch A sandwich buffet will be provided. Afternoon: The Impact of C₆₀ and the Fullerenes: Current Sussex Science 2pm Sussex Science: From Astrochemistry to Novel Nanomaterials Short TEDx -style talks from current academics at the University of Sussex . 3pm Coffee Break 3.30pm Panel Discussion: Building on the Sussex C 60 Legacy - The Future Panel members from education, research, industry and beyond will discuss future directions and take questions from the audience. 4.30pm Closing Remarks 4.35pm Drinks Reception 5pm – 5.45pm Optional Tour of Nanoscience Labs and the Kroto Room
